MANILA – Officials on Wednesday broke ground on the $3.7-billion Makati City subway, aimed at bringing relief to tens of thousands of commuters
The 10-station train system spans 10 kilometers with stops in key points around Makati. One of the stations will be near the planned Metro Manila subway so that passengers from one railway can easily transfer to the other.
The system’s initial 12 coaches will serve 27,000 passengers per hour, per direction and as many as 40,000 during peak hours, the Makati City government said in a statement.
Mayor Abby Binay and former Vice President Jejomar Binay also unveiled a scale model of the Makati Subway at the ground floor of Makati City Hall I.
The subway is being built by a consortium led by publicly listed IRC Properties together with Chinese companies.
The Makati City government said it expects the subway project to be fully functional by 2023.
